Weddings at Quinta do Ribeiro, Balugães
Quinta do Ribeiro is in Balugães, twenty minutes from Barcelos. I have filmed three weddings there, and it is one of the venues in the Minho where it is easiest to work without being noticed — which is, in the end, what people hire me for.

The space
The first thing you notice is how much garden there is. And, more to the point, there is shade — which at a summer wedding in the Minho is not a detail. Guests spread out and settle in, instead of spending the afternoon pressed against the one wall with shade.
For anyone photographing or filming, shade solves the worst problem of a summer wedding: hard midday light from directly above, which flatters nobody. Under the trees the light is soft, and there are places to make portraits at any hour, not only at the end of the day.
The hall is large without feeling like a warehouse, which is the usual failing of large halls. It carries the party without forcing me to rig extra lighting — and the less light I have to rig, the less you notice I am there.
About the people who run the venue: they are genuinely attentive. That is not a polite phrase. When something is needed halfway through the day, it gets solved without disturbing anyone and without stopping what is happening.
The outdoor ceremony, and the sound it has
For a civil ceremony, the service is usually held in the garden. And this is where Quinta do Ribeiro has something I have not found anywhere else.
You can hear the frogs in the stream. You can hear the wind in the trees. And you can hear the small waterfalls of the brooks that cross the grounds.
That is not background noise — it is the sound of that particular place, and it is what makes a ceremony there sound unlike a ceremony in any other garden. In a film, it is the difference between watching a pretty wedding and recognising the day that was yours.
Now the honest part, because it is the same thing seen from the other side: all of that is sound competing with your voices. An outdoor ceremony with running water nearby cannot be recorded with a microphone on the camera — the vows end up underneath the stream. It is recorded with a lapel mic on the groom, a recorder beside the celebrant, and a second recorder duplicating everything that matters.
Which is why someone who has filmed there arrives ready for it, and someone who has never been finds out on the day, when there is nothing left to do about it.

What changes when you already know the place
The first time I filmed at Quinta do Ribeiro, I spent the afternoon learning the place. By the third, I arrived knowing where I would be at every point of the day.
That shows in the film, not because there are more shots — because there are fewer shots too many. I know where the light comes from late in the day, where the ceremony happens and where I can stand without being in the way, and where the sound gets difficult.
For you it comes down to something simple: you will not see me hunting for angles while you are living the day.
